  1. Overview 1 item
    1. The required text for this module is Labor Economics by G.J. Borjas. There are several editions of this book. I am going to refer to the most recent (7th) edition of it in the lecture notes. You may use earlier editions if you happen to have access to a copy, however it is your sole responsibility to match topics, page numbers, etc. This textbook is easily accessible and comprehensive, its main purpose is to help students understand how the labour markets work. You are advised to read most if not all of it. Detailed chapter by chapter reading assignments are posted below.

In addition to the textbook, there will be a number of required research papers assigned for reading over the course of the semester. I will distribute a list of questions with each paper to guide your reading, and some of these (or similar) questions will be included into the final exam. The list of papers will be updated as the semester progresses, so please check regularly.

Other books and papers inluded into this list are optional. You are invited to use any sources or parts of them as you find useful, and there will be no test or exam questions specifically targeting this reading.

  2. Textbooks used throughout the semester 3 items
    1. Labor economics - George J. Borjas c2016

Book Suggested for student purchase This is required text for the module. There will be a chapter assigned for reading with each topic. The textbook is easily accessible and comprehensive, and you are advised to read it ahead of the lectures. You should also attempt as many end of chapter exercises as possible.

    2. Handbook of Labor Economics

Book Essential The handbooks contain surveys of the current state of the main research areas in labour economics. These surveys summarise the main results and newer developments from recent journal articles and discussion papers. You should read the chapters relevant to your applied project before commencing any data analysis, and keep these series in mind as an essential reference for your future work.

    3. Mostly harmless econometrics: an empiricist's companion - Joshua David Angrist, Jörn-Steffen Pischke c2009

Book Recommended The module relies on your knowledge of econometrics. You have to be familiar with the main empirical methods in order to read research papers, and all problem sets, assignments and exams contain questions related to the estimation of econometric models. This text covers most of the tools that we are going to use, and is generally harmless as you can see from the title. You may use any other econometric text of your choice as needed to refresh your knowledge or fill in the gaps.
